Die Zeit von Arsène Wenger in Japan ist eine eher unbekannte. Kein Wunder. Denn alles was danach kam, überstrahlte einfach alles. Unzählige Titel hat Arsène Wenger in 22 Jahren als Trainer von Arsenal London gesammelt. Aber seine ersten Erfolge sammelte er beim AS Monaco, ehe es nach Japan zu Nagoya Grampus Eight ging. Anstatt weiter in Europa zu coachen, entschied sich Arsène Wenger für das damalige Fußball-Entwicklungsland Japan. Und Wenger-San sollte mit seiner Entscheidung genau die richtigen Weichen für die Zukunft stellen. Denn genau diese Zeit formte ihn zu dem Trainer, der aus dem Mittelklasse-Klub Arsenal London diesen Verein machen sollte, der er vor allem Mitte der 2000er-Jahre war. Doch so harmonisch das klingt: Der Abschied von Arsène Wenger aus Monaco hatte auch mit einem großen Skandal zu tun. Und fast wäre er sogar in der Bundesliga gelandet.

Bei den Tottenham Hotspur steht vor den Spielen keine Lasagne mehr auf dem Speiseplan. Andere Nudelgerichte? Sind in Ordnung! Aber die Lasagne hatte ihre Chance. Und die vergab sie in der Saison 2005/2006 – der Schaden: Rund 10 Millionen Pfund. Da hatten die Tottenham Hotspur zum ersten Mal die Chance, in die Champions League einzuziehen. Am letzten Spieltag brauchte Tottenham dafür einen Sieg gegen West Ham United. Nur Arsenal London konnte den Spurs noch gefährlich werden. Am Tag zuvor checkte Tottenham dazu im Marriott West India Quay-Hotel in London ein. Dort sollte sich die Mannschaft in Ruhe auf ihr letzten Saisonspiel vorbereiten.
